Medicare & Medicare Supplements
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, and other individuals with special health circumstances.
Depending on your health insurance plan, Medicare pays for a portion of your health care costs, but there often certain out-of-pocket costs and services that are not covered. Medicare supplemental plans, also referred to as Medigap policies, fill the gaps where Medicare insurance alone does not cover your costs.
If you are concerned about the potential financial burden that is not covered by a standard insurance policy, a supplement may be just the thing to fill the gap and give you’re the additional protection that you have been looking for.
If you have questions about a Medicare supplement, you can trust Leverage Insurance to guide you into the right Medigap insurance plan that meets your needs and fits into your monthly budget.
Types of Plans.
What Are Medicare Supplements
Medicare supplement plans are offered by private insurance companies and help patients with out-of-pocket costs when they visit the doctor, fill prescriptions or go to the hospital. When your health care costs are billed, they are first paid up to your Medicare approved amount. After this amount has been paid, your Medicare Supplement policy pays its share of the bill.
The supplemental plans are designed to cover what original Medicare doesn’t: coinsurance and other copayments, operations that require being admitted to a hospital for more than three days, dual coverage (coverage of a person who is eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid), and caregiver benefits (for those that need frequent or skilled nursing care).
It is also important to note that a Medicare Supplement is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. A Medicare Advantage Plan is a way to get Medicare benefits, while a Medicare Supplement policy only Supplements your original Medicare benefits.
If you have done any research, you will have seen that each of supplement plans are labeled with a different letter. The letter of the plan helps you identify which benefits go with what plan. Every Medigap policy must follow federal and state laws designed to protect you, and it must be clearly identified as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” All policies offer the same basic benefits but some offer additional benefits, so you can choose which one meets your needs.
